In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.
The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the New Electoral Agreement
According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
